Reading Cash Flow Before Funding a Project

Why timing, margins, counterparties and downside assumptions matter more than headline contract value.

A large contract value can look impressive, but financing decisions depend on how cash actually moves through the project. Timing and reliability matter as much as total revenue.

Start with the cash conversion cycle

A credit review maps when costs are incurred, when invoices can be issued and when payment is realistically expected. It also considers retention sums, certification periods, taxes, supplier terms and possible delays.

Test the margin, not only the revenue

A project must retain enough margin after direct costs, overheads, contingencies and financing expenses. Sensitivity analysis helps show whether the business can still meet its obligations if costs rise or collections arrive later than expected.

Identify the controllable repayment route

Stronger structures connect financing to a visible source of repayment and include appropriate monitoring or collection controls. The purpose is not to remove every risk, but to understand it, price it and manage it deliberately.
